Filmmaker Kathy Huang Discusses TALES OF THE WARIA

ITVS’s Open Call provides finishing funds for single non-fiction or animation public television programs on any subject and from any viewpoint. Projects must have begun production as evidenced by a work-in-progress video.

Check out the clip below with filmmaker Kathy Huang, who received Open Call funds for her film TALES OF THE WARIA. The film looks at three transgender individuals in Indonesia––the world’s largest Muslim country––who search for love and acceptance with unexpected results. Learn more about what Huang hopes people will learn from the film.

Kathy would love hear more about your work in progress. I am an new independent filmmaker from Melbourne Australia making a film about a “family” of Australian Drag Queens. This unique and talented family began 10 years ago when Amanda Monroe (transgender male to female) decided to use Drag performance as a way to support transition. Check out the blog on http://www.tryingtobeisnoteasy.blogspot.com
Congratulations in taking on such and interesting topic and I agree with your comments on the interview that the transgendered community has been voiceless and therefore need to be given a voice. I'm sure your film will do that and I am trying to do the same with mine.

Hi Kathy, congratulations on your film in production. I agree that the subject you have chosen to explore needs coverage, clarification and in my mind humanization. I too am making a film about a similar topic. I am an independent new film maker from Melbourne Australia. My film is the story of a family of Drag Queens. This family began 10 years ago when Amanda Monroe (transgender male to female) first put on a dress and decided to use Drag as a way to work through her gener transformation. In the 10 years since that first night she has surrounded herself with talented, loyal and loving performers who now function very much like a family. Drags Aloud stepped out of Melbourne's gay venues in 2007 and began tournig on the international festival scene. This amazing story of love and loyalty is an example of what can happen when a courageous and determined transgended person puts themself out there and begins to live honestly. Please check out my blog about it and make contact. I would love to talk further about this topic with you.
