INPUT and ITVS: Public Television Across the Globe

LOADED GUN
LOADED GUN
Since 1978, the annual International Public Television (INPUT) conference has brought together the world’s leading professionals dedicated to television in the public interest. Part creative exchange and part strategic summit, INPUT sits at the heart of an international network, featuring a week of screenings, panels and special events in a different city each May. More than a thousand delegates from more than 50 countries attend, including independent filmmakers, executive producers, programmers, commissioning editors and many others.

ITVS AT INPUT 2004

EVERY CHILD IS BORN A POET
The conference features 80 hours of the world’s best programming, selected from more than 1,000 submissions from some 65 countries. All producers whose work is screened attend the conference. In 2004, INPUT was held May 24 through May 28 in Barcelona, Spain, where five programs from the United States were featured, all of them ITVS-funded productions: LOADED GUN, EVERY CHILD IS BORN A POET, FARMINGVILLE, QUINTET and FLAG WARS. Joining the filmmakers at INPUT 2004 were several ITVS staff members: Vice President and CFO Judy Tam, Director of Programming Claire Aguilar, Director of Production Mary Ann Thyken and Event Coordinator Nicole Carta.

ITVS CO-HOSTS THE BEST OF INPUT

To showcase programming from around the world for those who do not attend the yearly conference, mini–INPUT events are organized each year. Co-hosted by ITVS, KQED, the Goethe Institute, the Film Arts Foundation, and the Consulate Generals of Ireland, France and Sweden, a Best of INPUT event was held February 27 and 28, 2004, in San Francisco. Best of INPUT featured a selection of programs first shown at the 2003 INPUT conference, in Aarhus, Denmark, including programs from Ireland, Sweden, Germany, Bolivia, China, Switzerland and France. More than a hundred people attended this two-day-long screening event to view films, meet producers and take part in discussions.

Another successful INPUT screening in the United States was hosted by ITVS consulting editor David Liu in Syracuse, New York.

INPUT 2005: SAVE THE DATE

Mark your calendars: As a longtime member of the INPUT community, ITVS will host INPUT in San Francisco, May 1 through May 6, 2005—the first time in six years that the conference will be in the United States. The conference will include core screenings and panels as well as special events that will showcase the Bay Area’s independent media community and explore the power of public media worldwide. Some 2,000 delegates, including strong participation from independent producers, media arts centers and public television stations across the United States, are expected to attend.
