Beyond The Box is the Independent Television Service's (ITVS’s) semi-annual magazine containing feature articles, funding guidelines and applications, upcoming broadcasts and other useful information for independent filmmakers, public television stations and audiences.
Since the birth of the social issue documentary, filmmakers have aspired to create change. Independent filmmakers have a long tradition of collaborating with nonprofits, film festivals, unions and media arts centers to move film audiences to action. Since opening shop in 1991, ITVS has produced programming with a core mission—to expand cultural and global awareness, advance civic participation and creatively engage audiences, bringing new and diverse voices into the public discourse. By 1994, with the digital revolution in full swing, ITVS Interactive became an increasingly active force in supporting that mission. Read More
In the same year that ITVS was incorporated, Sony introduced the first Hi-8 camcorder—a videotape format that is all but obsolete today, a virtual relic, a dinosaur. In the relatively short span of ITVS's existence, the world of independent media-making has undergone a sea change, with the transition from analog to digital, the birth of the Internet, the introduction of digital satellite, HD and the first forays into interactive television.
