Moving Beyond Borders
Through ITVS International, independent filmmakers from countries outside the United States showcase their programs on U.S. television, and U.S. filmmakers have their programs broadcast abroad. These documentaries dig beneath the surface, past stereotypes and headlines, bringing unfamiliar worlds to life and connecting our global community. ITVS International's first program, PICKLES, INC., aired this past summer 2005 on PBS's Wide Angle series. Israeli filmmakers Nitza Gonen and Dalit Kimor follow eight widows in the Israeli Arab village of Tamra, who establish the Azka Pickle Cooperative to seek financial independence for themselves and their children.
INPUT Unites the World of Public Television
In May 2005, ITVS hosted INPUT, the annual international public television conference which brings together public TV professionals and producers from around the world. The six-day conference, held in San Francisco, drew 1,700 attendees from 58 countries. "This event was significant for ITVS," said Judy Tam, ITVS vice president and INPUT 2005 executive producer. "The partnerships and expertise we gained are invaluable as ITVS enters the realm of international programming." INPUT received major support from CPB and the Rockefeller, Ford and MacArthur Foundations, as well as a host of organizations and consulates. With support from the Knight and Gates Foundations, 24 CEOs from around the world met for the INPUT Public Broadcasters Global Media Summit on HIV and AIDS. A week-long seminar for journalists on public television was developed by U.C. Berkeley's Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism, and the Open World Exchange Program brought 10 Russian filmmakers for a two-week stay in San Francisco where they attended screenings and met with local filmmakers. The main attraction of this conference was undoubtedly the programming—94 films from 38 countries were screened, each followed by discussion with the filmmaker. Headsets and live interpreters allowed for participation across language barriers—a rare opportunity for producers and programmers from around the globe to interface on their favorite topic: content. |
