From the President

ITVS President Sally Jo Fifer

Digital technology hit the marketplace more than two decades ago, but only recently has it started to remake the television landscape. But no one knows which changes will last and spread—video-on-demand?—and which will wither and die (zip drives, anyone?). Uncertainty and urgency make a scary combination. And it all comes down to digital rights. Every producer and distributor wants to control these rights, even if they don’t yet know what they mean or what to do with them.

It’s a dilemma that’s rocking the commercial world, but it also threatens the delicate network of relationships that make public media possible. Here at ITVS, we work at the intersection of independent producers and public television—a partnership that has realized incredible achievements and faced significant challenges. No one knows how digital rights will ultimately reshape these relationships. But we do know that public media must survive and thrive in the new television landscape. And that means fighting for permanent, protected real estate for independent voices in the digital world.

In this issue of Beyond the Box, you will find highlights from The New Deal: How Digital Platforms Change Negotiations Between Public Media and Independent Producers, a study ITVS co-produced with the Center for Social Media at American University. If there

are rough seas ahead, we hope this study will serve as a depth chart for our stakeholders to understand what’s happening now and what might happen tomorrow.

Also in this issue of Beyond the Box, we are pleased to announce several of the projects funded through the first round of our ITVS International Call. Producers from more than 75 countries sent in proposals for documentary completion funds. The selected projects represent documentary stories that will open doors into the hearts and minds of global neighbors seldom seen on American television.

As we go to press, we continue to commemorate ITVS’s 15th anniversary with events around the country. At 15, we find ourselves asking what’s next and what’s at stake. We believe that independents need a healthy public media and that public media needs thriving independents. Today’s transitional market puts pressure on these complex partnerships, but the road ahead holds great promise for public television and independent producers to together ensure the future of television for the people, by the people—no matter what kind of screen it’s on.
